Functional Safety and Understanding Hazardous Location Equipment

When working with Eberbach on custom solution, Eberbach’s engineers are focused on not only providing a solution that will meet the application performance specification but will also be safe for our customers to operate.

Eberbach engineering understands Functional safety requirements and will design solutions that reduce the level of risk in a system during operation. While zero risk is an unattainable goal, functional safety identifies potentially dangerous conditions that could result in harm and automatically enables corrective actions to avoid or reduce the impact of an incident. It is part of the overall safety of a system or device that depends on automatic safeguards responding to a hazardous event.
Functional safety relies on active systems that can respond to a potentially dangerous situation. Examples include the deactivation of a motor should an access door open the automatic shutdown of machine when a specific sensor level has been reached.
Eberbach Engineering works to remove unreasonable risk due to hazards caused by malfunctioning behavior of electrical / electronic systems.

IEC 61508, IEC 61511, Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910 Subpart O and 1910 Subpart S specifically are examples of standards Eberbach engineers are looking at while engineering custom solution.
The IEC 61508 series provides functional safety standards for the lifecycle of electrical, electronic or programmable electronic (E/E/PE) systems and products. It addresses those parts of a device or system that perform automated safety functions including, for example, sensors, control logic, actuators and micro-processors.
IEC 61508 allows for the development of a uniform technical policy that can be applied for all safety systems that are electrically-based. It is a horizontal standard applicable across a wide range of industry sectors.

With regards to Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR), Eberbach engineering focuses on 910 Subpart O - Machinery and Machine Guarding and 1910 Subpart S – Electrical.
910 Subpart O - Machinery and Machine Guarding, Moving machine parts have the potential to cause severe workplace injuries, such as crushed fingers or hands, amputations, burns, or blindness. Safeguards are essential for protecting workers from these preventable injuries. Any machine part, function, or process that may cause injury must be safeguarded. When the operation of a machine or accidental contact injure the operator or others in the vicinity, the hazards must be eliminated or controlled. This page contains general information on the various hazards of mechanical motion and techniques for protecting workers.
1910 Subpart S – Electrical, Eberbach engineering focuses on a few specific sub-parts 1910.305 - Wiring methods, components, and equipment for general use, 1910.399 Hazardous (classified) locations and 1910.399 design of industrial machinery overview.
