Single-Use Mixers & Bioreactors

Eberbach Corporation's Single-Use Mixers are impeller-free mixing systems that generate bulk fluid movement by moving the entire vessel using orbital, reciprocal, or rocking motions. They're used across upstream processing (media dissolution, dilution, blending, pH/osmolality adjustment), offline preparation (seed media and buffers, feed blending, cell bank resuspension), antifoam and process additive handling, and downstream processing (buffer prep, feed conditioning, viral inactivation, UF/DF prep, and final formulation/fill-finish). These platform come in different capacity sizes to handle most application needs, small, medium and large capacity — with options for integrated load cells, advanced machine controls, SCADA integration, specialized sensors, safety enclosures, hazardous-location ratings, and Eberbach offers CFD analysis and simulations.

Applications

Upstream Processing

• Dissolving dry powdered media

• Diluting concentrated liquid media

• Blending multiple media components

• Adjusting pH and osmolality

• Maintaining homogeneity during sterile filtration

• Preparing media for seed reactors and production reactors

Offline Preparation

Concentrated feeds are prepared separately and added during fed-batch culture.

These feeds include:

  • Seed Media Preparation
  • Seed Buffer Preparation and Solution Formulation
  • Supplement and Feed Media Blending
  • High-Density Cell Bank Thawing and Resuspension Pooling

Antifoam & Process Additives

  • Dilution of concentrated antifoam
  • Blending surfactants
  • Preparing process additives
  • Suspending additives that settle during hold

Downstream Processing

  • Chromatography-buffer preparation
  • Buffer dilution from concentrates
  • Chromatography-feed conditioning:
    • pH adjustment
    • Conductivity adjustment
    • Salt addition
    • Dilution
    • Addition of stabilizers
    • Addition of detergent or additives
  • Low-pH viral inactivation
  • Intermediate product pooling between purification steps
  • Ultrafiltration/Diafiltration preparation
  • Final Formulation/Fill-Finish:
    • Excipient and Additive Blending
    • Bulk Drug Substance Homogenization
    • Adjuvant blending (Vaccines)

The Eberbach Advantage

  • Vessel-scale circulation: Eberbach orbital, reciprocal, and rocking shakers generate bulk fluid movement without relying on impeller tips, which only provide localized mixing
  • Low shear mixing: By eliminating impeller bags, Eberbach shakers provide:
    • Less mechanical stress on sensitive proteins
    • Fewer potential collision points
    • Lower bubble generation
  • Better solids suspension: Eberbach orbital, reciprocal, and rocking shakers suspend and maintain solids more effectively than conventional impeller-driven systems.
  • Simpler bag construction: Eliminating internal impellers significantly lowers bag costs while removing multiple operational risks:
    • Lower assembly defects and simpler bag manufacturing
    • No mechanical failure risks, including impeller seizure and magnetic decoupling
    • Elimination of wear points, such as rotational bearing surfaces and fluid-contacting rotating components
    • No impeller installation or alignment issues
    • Shorter lead times for single-use bag supply
      chains
  • No impeller related failure modes: No seizure, no
magnetic decoupling, no bearing wear, no alignment
    issues
